WOMEN took the helm in the annual ladies skippers’ race held in ideal conditions off Hillarys on Sunday morning.

Some were regular crew members, some came from the dinghy section and, in the case of Kerry Matthews, she came without any sailing experience hoping for an introduction to sailing and skippered Quicksilver to second and fastest in division two.

In division one, Chelsea Bradford helmed for Dad on Salamander to score a first and fastest with Sue Bird on Perle second and Marie O’Brien bringing Sandrine in third.

The women had done their part exceptionally well but were let down on two occasions by incorrect navigator advice on mark rounding, causing Mulberry to retire and Sandrine and Surfer Rosa to lose considerable ground.

Marlene Scheckel skippered Volant to win division two, Quicksilver second and Elissa Graham on Blue Chip was third. In division three Verma Vitales helmed Pandora into first and fastest whilst Sally Simmonds on Sensei was second.
