SEEING satisfied customers makes all the hard work behind the scenes worth it for small business owner Eamon Sullivan.
The Bib and Tucker and May Street Larder co-owner compared starting businesses to his swimming career.
“No one sees the hard work you put in, they just see the end result,” the North Perth resident said. “Seeing good reviews and people enjoying their meals (are the highlights of being in business).”
Sullivan, who opened Bib and Tucker in 2013, said he supported local suppliers because they were part of the community.
“Supporting locals makes sense,” he said. “With all the apartments, there’s about 300 people who are local to us.”
The biggest challenge over the past five years has been finding a balance in Perth’s hospitality industry that rewards staff, customers and business owners.
Sullivan said wage increases often led to price rises for the customer.
“We are not just increasing prices because we’re greedy,” he said.
“We need to make sure everyone’s winning: the staff and the customer.”
The plea from Sullivan is “don’t forget about us in winter”.
He said a lot of work went in to keeping customers coming through the doors in off-peak times.
“We have retractable roofing on the balcony so we’re not dictated by the rain,” Sullivan said.
“It’s a great place to sit and watch a storm role in.”
Bib and Tucker has launched a Winter Series of events that starts on May 15 with ‘Fire and Smoke’ and concludes on September 11 with ‘Vegan Degustation and Natural Wine’.
