Sweet success for baking queen

‘When someone says, ‘Oh my god, that is the best thing I’ve ever tasted’, it instantly reminds me why I love baking so much,’ Mrs Harris said.

‘One of my clients even saves up part of her pension for half a dozen cupcakes as her special splurge every few months, which blew me away.’

‘They make all the sleep deprivation and stress worth it.’

Mrs Harris said she started Sugarplum Sweets creating custom dessert catering from her home kitchen about two and a half years ago.

However, it was not until opening ‘the prettiest booth’ at the Perth Royal Show last year that her business really took off.

‘I was working full time in real estate and by November it had exploded; I simply couldn’t keep up with the baking, emails, everything,’ Mrs Harris said.

‘In February, my husband and I realised I needed to get out, I needed a commercial kitchen.

‘I knew the only way I could make sure everything was fresh was to make it right here.

‘We bake every single day, so everything that goes out has to be totally perfect.’

Mrs Harris said the crowds lining up outside the door when she opened earlier this month blew her away.

‘It was absolutely surreal because every detail of Sugarplum Sweets is part of what I have been dreaming of for years,’ she said.

‘All I kept hearing was how good the coffee was, which was a big thing for me because we’re already known for our desserts.

‘I love that my clients know every single thing is handmade right down to the lemon curd in our lemon meringues. Nothing comes from a packet, nothing comes out of a jar.’
