Baby Shark: the song getting stuck in the heads of Perth’s mums and dads

Rachel FennerWestern Suburbs Weekly

Baby Shark – it’s the song that’s driving Perth parents insane and we guarantee that most people with a child under the age of five have had the song stuck in their head at least once this month.

The Korean version is the one we are most familiar with (do not press play if you do not want this stuck in your head).

It was posted on YouTube by Pink Fong in June 2016 and has had more than a 1.5 billion views.

But where did this annoying earworm come from?

Well, the song has been around for a few years and you can thank K-Pop (the music genre that brought us Gangnam Style) for its current popularity in Australia.

There is even a dance craze called The Baby Shark Challenge spreading around the internet.

During the challenge, people perform the moves and sing while being filmed.

Currently, the Korean Pink Fong video is the 37th most watched on YouTube and there is even an app.

Pink Fong is a children’s entertainment brand that makes videos, apps, books and toys.

Their version of Baby Shark recently entered the UK top 20, so Australia will probably follow suit soon.

Recently, a remix of the song began making the rounds on Facebook and has clocked more than 1.1 million views.

We expect this one will be blasting from car windows this summer.

For those who haven’t had enough of the song, have a listen.
