Florist to the stars sets up new shop

Sara FitzpatrickWestern Suburbs Weekly

HE is the go-to florist for Kylie and Elton John when they strut into town and now Matthew Landers brings his award-winning artistry and signature style to Claremont.

The homegrown artiste recently opened a second Perth store in charming Old Theatre Lane, offering his own range of homewares including candles and vases that complement his plants and cut flowers.

“We have lots of beautiful ready-to-go bouquets on offer as well as a large selection of stems and bunches that allows clients to come in and experience, touch, see, smell and feel,” Landers said.

“We’re also able to create bespoke designs on the spot too.”

Claremont is a natural choice for the outlet (the other is in East Vic Park); Landers has had his eye on the suburb since he and his mother sold their Nedlands store more than 10 years ago.

“I wanted to create another Perth store completely on-brand but really focused on the romanticism of shopping in a florist, as there aren’t too many around in Perth these days,” he said.

“The look and feel is very Parisienne and perfectly encapsulates what I had envisioned for the Claremont store.”

When it comes to home trends, Landers is relishing the minimalist look.

“I love that everything has been brought back to simplicity, with little fuss and no big, bold statements,” he said.

“This is my favourite place in the trend cycle.

“I would much rather see a vase of 100 stems of tulips en-masse than some mixed conglomeration of multi-coloured ‘somethings’ jammed into any gold vessel you can lay your hands on.”

His top floristry tip for autumn/winter is to embrace this simplicity and display one item in a beautiful, fuss-free setting.

“There is also a spotlight on preserved flowers at the moment, which is a great investment if you’re looking for something that will last a season in your home,” Landers said.

Landers’ focus is very much on Claremont for the rest of 2020 while he narrows down on what people want, but long term he plans to build the business further.

“There are options in front of me right now and the decision will be to either open in Brisbane, or with the direct flight to London, potentially in the UK,” he said.
