A FEAR of flying has not stopped celebrity chef Jack Stein, and son of food legend Rick Stein, from returning to Perth for this year’s Good Food and Wine Show from July 14 -16.

Stein, who is the headline act at this year’s event, will take part in the Good Food Theatre’s live cooking demonstrations along with Australian chefs Manu Feidel, Gary Mehigan and Matt Moran.

Having worked all over the world including in Sydney at the famed Tetsuya, Stein said he loved WA and could not wait to come back, despite the scary joyride on a hand-built plane that his production team organised for him.

“I don’t like flying and the production company put me up in a hand-built plane,” he said.

“They told me in the morning that this man had built it, and that he was a scientist.

“I asked if he was a plane scientist, they said no he was a geologist.

“Still we took off from his lawn and had the most majestic view of Pemberton and the surrounding area – I survived.”

Looking forward to catching up with Wildflower’s Jed Gerrard who he described as a talent, Stein said he was looking forward to visiting his favourite drinking hole PICA Bar and our South- West as his getaway of choice.

“PICA bar in Perth is right outside the hotel I stay in and perfect when jet lagged,” he said.

“Yallingup, it’s the first place I surfed in WA many years ago and I like the sand dunes.

“It reminds me of Cornwall – except the waves are better.”

As for the most enjoyable part of the show, Stein said he loved smelly cheeses and the oyster bar and said patrons should make sure they got the most out of their foodie experience.

“I always ask one question with every sample, normally they are quite strange but I think it’s important to find out about everything that they offer you for free,” he said.

“Like if you taste some cheese, ask them if they have any pets, or what is their cheese inspiration – anything really to just to show you are interested.”
