Masterchef audition was never on the menu for Brendan Pang

FOR former social worker Brendan Pang, auditioning for a television show like Masterchef was never on the cards.

The Applecross resident is one of three West Australians to take part in the hit TV series and while one of the younger contestants, Pang has proven he’s got what it takes to go all the way wooing the judges with his Mauritian-inspired cooking.

The 24-year-old said he grew up immersed in a foodie culture with his mum Dany (a baker), dad and his grandparents all teaching him about his Mauritian heritage and their French, Chinese and Indian influences.

“A big part of my love of food definitely comes from my Mauritian heritage,” he said.

“I’ve always loved everything about food from a young age. In the lead-up to Masterchef there was a lot of time in the kitchen with Mum, me doing the savouring and Mum baking – we bounce off each other.”

Convinced by a friend to audition, Pang said the whole experience from the get-go had been special and inspiring.

“It was quite a long and exciting process – but I got the call… and then I made the top 24,” he said.

“Meeting the judges for the first time was a pretty special moment for me but it’s been a good start and I’ve cooked dishes that I’ve been quite proud of.

“I’ve learned a lot from them already and the other contestants.”

With Nigella Lawson hitting TV screens this week, Pang said “the Domestic Goddess” was everything he hoped she would be, encouraging and genuine.

“That was such a special moment and we were so happy to see her walk in.”

Tune in Wednesday night to see which Masterchef contestant’s journey almost comes to an end during Nigella week.
