Russell Crowe set to shrug off award snubs

AAPWestern Suburbs Weekly

AFTER more than a decade of snubs Russell Crowe appears set to pick up a major Hollywood awards show nomination.

Crowe is expected to join Australians Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, Toni Collette and Sarah Snook with Golden Globe nominations on Monday in Beverly Hills.

The New Zealand-born Crowe, one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars in the early 2000s, is a favourite for a nod in the Globes TV movie/limited series actor category for his portrayal of controversial Fox News boss Roger Ailes in The Loudest Voice.

Kidman cleaned up on the awards circuit in 2017-18 for her first season of the TV series Big Little Lies and is expected to pick up a Globe nod for this year’s second season.

Kidman is also an outside shot at a Globe supporting actress nomination for her film Bombshell, also about Ailes and the women who accused him of sexual harassment.

Robbie is a strong chance for a supporting nod for her performance in Bombshell.

Collette is a Globe nomination contender in the TV movie/limited series category for Unbelievable.

Snook’s powerful performance as the daughter of a media mogul in TV drama series Succession is also a solid chance for a nod.

In the early 2000s Crowe was a regular on the awards circuit with nods for films including The Insider, Gladiator, Master and Commander, A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man, but his status cooled.

His last major Hollywood individual nomination was at the Globes in 2006 for Cinderella Man.

Crowe had three consecutive Oscar nominations in 2000 to 2002 but has not picked up one since.

He did tag along with Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway for a SAG ensemble nomination for Les Miserables in 2013.

Crowe also received a Razzie nomination last year for worst supporting actor opposite Tom Cruise in the panned The Mummy.

The Golden Globes winners will be announced on January 5.
