Rob Palandri was raised in Margaret River and has been involved in the wine industry as a producer, wine bar owner, agent, drinker and reviewer of 1000s of wines.

XANADU is one of the pioneer vineyards of Margaret River.

Planted in 1977 by Dr John and Ethnie Lagan who had migrated from Ireland 10 years earlier, Xanadu the name came from the fantasy home of Kubla Khan.

As Olivia Newton-John famously sang: “And now, open your eyes and see, what we have made is real, we are in Xanadu, a place where nobody dared to go”.

Unfortunately Dr John did not live to see his own creation and vision become real but it was a place he dared to go and he founded winning the most coveted wine trophy in Australia – the Jimmy Watson Trophy – 40 years later with an astonishing 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon made from his ideal 65ha plot.

Now owned by the Rathbone family since 2005, Xanadu comfortably ranks in the very top echelon of Margaret River wine hierarchy.

The Jimmy Watson Trophy is awarded annually at the Melbourne Wine Show from hundreds of entries for the ‘Best one or two year old finished red wine’.

This trophy win is no fluke: Xanadu has won the trophy for the best Cabernet Sauvignon in Australia at the National Wine Show Canberra six years in a row.
