Max started playing the cello when he was aged four, and is looking forward to playing a piece with Vienna Pops.

“I like the thrill you get when you perform,” he said.

“I get a bit nervous, but once you get up and start playing, it’s really fun.”

The International School of Western Australia student hopes to be a world-class cellist when he grows up.

As with previous years, the New Year’s Eve concerts will raise funds for charity.

“Over the 30 years, the Vienna Pops concerts have raised more than $1 million, which has gone to a wide range of deserving causes including housing and sanitation projects in Cambodia,” RCOP president Stephen Inouye said.

“Including a matinee performance this year will provide a great opportunity for young families to come and enjoy this musical extravaganza.

The Vienna Pops concerts take place at 2pm and 9.30pm at Winthrop Hall, the University of Western Australia, on December 31.

Tickets start at $40.
