The Claremont resident recently released Beat Zen and the Art of Dave, a follow-up to his first travel memoir with stories from his 15 years on the road.

McNamara said the second book offered more of a reflective, philosophical look at travelling.

“I compared my previous experiences with travel and noticed some changes, particularly in the younger generation; I call them ibackpackers,” he said.

“The basic motivations that travellers have – to escape, for anonymity or reinvention – they are still there. But technology, I think, has had a big impact.”

McNamara said he noticed that some young people were travelling to avoid commitments and consequences, but justified their choices with new age mantras.
