QUICK reporting by members of the public and fast action by firefighters helped to save Cottesloe’s historic Albion Hotel from fire about 6.25pm last night.

“The cause is accidental, a spark from an open fireplace,” a DFES spokeswoman said.

A passing member of the public reported seeing smoke going across the hotel’s rear carpark from the roof, before firefighters from Claremont, Daglish, Fremantle and Osborne Park fire stations took until 6.50pm to extinguish the fire, which will not be investigated.

This morning, burnt roof timbers could be seen at the rear of the Stirling Highway hotel, after firefighters restricted the damage to about $10,000.
