IT was business as usual for the barbers at Marketlane Subi in the aftermath of an electrical switchboard fire.

The fire began just after 12am on Friday morning at the complex on the corner of Station and Hood streets, and caused about $400,000 damage.

Coles and Target opened as usual, but many specialty shops operating from the affected switchboard were closed due to the lack of power.

Barber Lab snipped and chopped their way through the blackout, with owner Chris Suh wearing a small torch.

Windsor Knight director Greg Pearce said he had been at the complex at 2am to respond to the issue, along with Doric and subcontractors.

“They deserve praise, they were on site as soon as possible,” he said.

“The sprinkling system contained the fire, but did cause some water damage.

“Even a minor fire isn’t good, but it certainly tested our system.”

Subiaco Fresh and Grocery was the most affected, despite no fire damage to the store; the water damage caused their ceiling to fall in.

“We’ll work with the tenant to get them back as soon as possible,” Mr Pearce said.

Friendlies pharmacist Murray Rowe said he came in early after the call from Mr Pearce.

“We literally had an inch of water through the place,” he said.

“We were tipping water out of our computers.”

Mr Rowe said the damaged items in the store would all be covered by insurance.
