Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation mascot Stitches celebrates his eighth birthday with twins Andrew (3) and Michael Mitchell (3) and iiNet mascots Ian and Irene.

Stitches, the Princess Margaret Hospital bear, celebrated his birthday by unwrapping six internet pods that will be placed throughout the hospital for patients and visitors to use.

iiNet funded and installed the pods free.

Chief executive Denys Pearce said the foundation approached iiNet with the idea of making the hospital environment as normal as possible.

‘It was to increase the connection between the outside world and the world inside the hospital,’ Mr Pearce said.

‘And they (patients) can keep in contact via social media and email much easier.’

Coralie Mitchell has been bringing her now three-year-old twin boys Andrew and Michael to the hospital about four times a week for the past two-and-a-half years. The boys were diagnosed with rare disease Morquio syndrome, which results in various abnormalities and organ problems, which can cause dwarfism and spinal injuries.

Ms Mitchell said having the internet would make a huge difference in her and her children’s lives.

‘When you’re in here for weeks you can feel really isolated,’ she said. ‘Having the internet will help with everyday things like book keeping, banking and socialising.’
