A CITY Beach boy (16) has been charged after the allegedly stolen Subaru Forrester he was driving crashed and caught fire during a police chase at Norbury Crescent in City Beach yesterday.

“As a result of the crash the vehicle caught fire, destroying the engine bay and scorching the roller door of a house,” Senior Sergeant Peter Gilmour said.

It will be alleged the locked Forrester was taken when it was parked on the verge in Grasmere Avenue, City Beach, overnight on December 12.

Sgt Gilmour said it was seen by the public on Hale Road later the next day, after which police “flooded” the area and there was a short chase to 80km/h.

“Whilst travelling along Tilton Crescent the Subaru travelled over a slight crest or hill on the approach to Norbury Crescent, and at the intersection the vehicle failed to negotiate a left-hand turn and travelled across the front verge of 9 Norbury Crescent, colliding with a limestone letter box and coming to rest against the roller door garage,” he said.

The boy was charged with stealing a motor vehicle, failing to comply with a direction to stop, reckless driving, possessing cannabis and stolen property, and no driver’s licence.

He was released on bail to attend Perth Children’s Court on January 11.
