Candlelight carols event honoured

“It’s lovely to be recognised as an event that assists a community that does not have the privileges of Peppermint Grove,” Carols by Candlelight committee leader Simone Fleay said.

Australia Day awards for Peppermint Grove, Mosman Park and Cottesloe councils were presented at a Peppermint Grove-hosted ceremony and breakfast at Manners Hill Park on January 26.

In the park before Christmas, Carols by Candlelight raised $4500 that the early childhood centre used to give each of its children a pair of bathers and a beach towel, and hold a Christmas party.

The Peppermint Grove Community Group of the Year went to Basil and Jenny Twine from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club and the Citizen of the Year was Ian Andrews from Mosman Bay Sea Scouts.

Announcing his Town’s awards, Mosman Park Mayor Ron Norris said the Youth Advisory Council-organised fun race SToMP! deserved to be the Community Event of the Year because it had become an important connection between youth and their community.

The Mosman Park Community Group 2016 was Mosman Park Netball Club, comprising players aged 11 to 50 in 19 clubs, and Mr Norris said club member, coach and committee member Margaret Baldwin was “truly an inspiration to us all” for her long-standing work.

Former Cottesloe councillor of 17 years and deputy mayor Jack Walsh won that Town’s Citizen of the Year Award, after retiring from the council last year.

“His experience was a great asset to the council, and he was able to assist councillors with his informed views when considering a wide range of complex matters,” Mayor Jo Dawkins said.

Cottesloe’s Young Citizen of the Year, University of WA medical student Tom Joyner, won a Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation trip for his community work, including being chief executive officer of the not-for-profit Indigenous Communities Education and Awareness Foundation.

The Cottesloe Community Group of the Year Award went to the Westcoast Community Centre at The Grove Library, and the Melanoma WA Community Skin Screening Week was Community Event of the Year.
