PERTH’S first cat cafe will open in Subiaco.

Last Sunday, The Cat Cafe Perth founders Chris Mewburn and Terps Platritis posted on their Facebook page that the City of Subiaco had approved their change-of-use application at 147 Rokeby Road.

“After months of work, discussion and deliberation, we now officially have the green light for our concept,” the message said.

“Following this week’s meetings with officers from building, heritage and health services, we will have a better understanding of the future timeline.

“Congratulations Perth, you have just approved your first cat cafe.”

Last year, the Western Suburbs Weekly reported that Mr Mewburn and Ms Platritis exceeded their online crowdfunding campaign to raise $150,000 to open the cafe.

In December 2015, the couple said that some people used the City’s request for public comment to oppose their business proposal.

They said the two major concerns were about health standards and competition.

“We have met, and gone above and beyond, every health code,” they said.

“Our risk management plan is airtight, and the health, safety and happiness of our cats, staff, visitors, and wider public is our top priority.”

Themed cat cafes started in Japan about 10 years ago, with patrons all over the world enjoying a cup of coffee while making feline friends ever since.

Australia’s first cat café opened in Melbourne in July 2014.
