Perth student paints his way to Young Archie portrait competition

CHRIST Church Grammar School student Lucca Harvey has painted his way to the finals of the 2019 Young Archie portrait competition, run by the organisers of the Archibald Prize.

The year 11 art student was named a finalist in the 13 to 15 year age category.

His self-portrait titled A splash of me received recognition from judges, including artist and 2016 Archibald Prize finalist Marikit Santiago.

“This is the first painting I’ve ever done in watercolour,” Lucca said.

“As a first piece, I decided to paint myself because in the likely event of messing it up I didn’t want to hurt another person’s feelings.”

Lucca’s self-portrait is currently on exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

The winner will be announced on August 10.
