City balks at funding request

Rosanna CandlerWestern Suburbs Weekly

The Regal Theatre Foundation recently invited the City of Subiaco to become the first commercial sponsor of its ongoing $10 million restoration program.

Cr Lynley Hewett said the City should not spend ratepayers' money on a private enterprise.

"None of the money earned there goes back to the Regal," Cr Hewett said. "Although I am concerned about the structural security of the place, they really need to look at how to change their trust structure for the future."

The item was deferred to the next round of council meetings for City staff to investigate alternative ways to work with the Foundation.

Regal Theatre Foundation chairman and former Subiaco Mayor Richard Diggins said the restoration would include works on the upstairs balcony, replacing the western staircase, a roof replacement, new seating, electrical upgrades and repainting.

"Stage one (replacing the 26-year-old auditorium seating) is planned to be completed by late January 2016," Mr Diggins said.
