City of Nedlands to decide fate of Westside Wolves hockey pitch proposal

Victoria RificiWestern Suburbs Weekly

CITY of Nedlands councillors have been advised to reject Westside Wolves Hockey Club’s plan to build a synthetic hockey pitch at the Mt Claremont Oval Reserve.

Councillors will consider the officer’s recommendation to reject the proposal due to a lack of support from existing tenants and community members, at a meeting on Tuesday night.

According to an officer’s report, submissions from clubs that use the oval did not support the proposal.

However, 1134 people supported the proposal, 930 rejected it and 15 were unsure.

The City also received three petitions against the proposal.

According to an officer’s report Mt Claremont residents raised concerns regarding the impacts on the community, particularly the potential loss of public open space available for sport and passive recreation use.

The oval services about 2740 sports club members plus the Mt Claremont Primary School community, as well as participants in the Kidz’n Sport Program.

The City received a letter from the Department of Education that stated the proposal posed “no undue impact on the operation of the Mt Claremont Primary School”.
