Claremont council backs participation in vegetation and groundwater study

Belinda CiprianoWestern Suburbs Weekly

THE Town of Claremont will participate in a vegetation and groundwater study after councillors unanimously voted to take part in the scheme at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

The scheme, run in partnership with the Western Suburbs Councils, Department of Water and Water Corporation, is aimed at developing and evaluating options as a means to furthering public open space water security for the Town’s parks, oval and reserves.

Councillor Kate Main said given there was a shortage of water in Western Australia if Claremont were to be included in the scheme it could be very exciting.

Cr Jill Goetze echoed Cr Main’s sentiments saying the scheme sounded like a great suggestion and it would be fantastic if it came about.

“We definitely need to investigate it further,” she said.

Cr Paul Kelly said he supported the scheme but did so with caution.

“This is a major exercise,” he said.

“We are talking millions.”

Councillors agreed to allocate $5781 from the existing groundwater project money in the 2015-16 budget towards stormwater infiltration, an analysis of recycled water options, an administration report on the outcome and to consider the inclusion of $28,290 in the 2016-17 budget for progression of a recycled water scheme.

A further $200,000 would be required for the next phase, which would include public consultation.
