Claremont: Student fights off two attackers

A FEMALE student (20) from Japan fought off two men who attempted to grab her handbag in broad daylight near Claremont Park, Claremont.

“She put up a good little fight,” Senior Sergeant Tony Booker said.

The overseas student was walking alone to Claremont train station when the men approached her from behind as she walked adjacent Thompson Road towards the park about 1.45pm on Monday.

“She was grabbed from behind by two males, one of whom stood guard while the other tried to pull the bag off her shoulder,” Sgt Booker said.

The student resisted, tucking the bag under her arm and bending over to protect it and herself.

Her attacker made unsuccessful attempts to open the bag’s zip.

“’She started screaming, made lots of noise, which attracted about four neighbours who came and the attackers ran away,” Sgt Booker said.

The student was uninjured, but Sgt Booker said anyone should walk with company at all times.

An attacker was described as dark skinned, wearing denim shorts, a red T-shirt and a red hat, while his accomplice was dark skinned and wore a grey jacket.
