Claws out over Subiaco cat cafe

SUBIACO business owners and residents are petitioning against a cat cafe moving into Rokeby Road, according to concept founders Chris Mewburn and Terps Platritis.

On December 1, the Western Suburbs Weekly reported that Mr Mewburn and Ms Platritis had applied with the City of Subiaco for a change of use application from shop to cat cafe at 147 Rokeby Road.

The couple wrote on The Cat Cafe Perth Facebook page yesterday that some people were using the City’s request for public comment to oppose their business proposal.

They said the two major concerns were about health standards and competition.

“We have met, and gone above and beyond, every health code,” the message said.

“Our risk management plan is airtight, and the health, safety and happiness of our cats, staff, visitors, and wider public is our top priority.”

The post also suggested that foot traffic from their 16,000 friends on Facebook would be “welcomed in light of the AFL moving out to Burswood”.

“We are not a normal cafe, we are a destination business and a social enterprise,” it said.

“Many people who we will attract and help will come from beyond the normal Subiaco crowd.

“Please, please write an email to city@subiaco.wa.gov.au telling them how great The Cat Cafe will be for attracting customers, tourism, and general fun and vibrancy in Subiaco.”

Earlier this year, Mr Mewburn and Ms Platritis exceeded their online crowdfunding campaign to raise $150,000 to open the cafe.
