Deputy Mayor Bruce Haynes said it would be ‘advantageous’ for existing councillors to run for another term because the Town was going through a transition period with amalgamations.

Cr Paul Kelly, who was first elected in 1994, said it was important that experienced councillors remained on the council because of the imminent restructure.

Cr Karen Wood said she had decided against running for the council again but changed her mind because of ‘several upcoming and ongoing projects and problems, quite aside from the proposed mergers’.

‘I think it best to stay on and keep fighting,’ Cr Wood said.

Cr Jill Goetze said she would also re-elect for another term.

‘It’s a great council and I enjoy being part of it,’ Cr Goetze said.

Councillor terms will end in June 2015 with commissioners taking over new councils from July 1.

Nominations for local government elections opened last Thursday and close on September 12.
