Home decor storeowner Kate Hullet, interior designer Gabrielle Scott and green cleaning product creator Hannah Fick have collaborated to form an idea to revitalise Bay View Terrace.
Funded by independent organisation FORM, creative types submitted ideas for street activation in the laneways and streets of Claremont’s town centre for the Public Platform festival on April 2 and 3.
A former Claremont student, Ms Scott said she was excited people would see the suburb “as it had not been seen before”.
“We all know Claremont intimately so when the project talks about these streets, I know them and I care about them,” she said.
“Every year FORM focuses on a different area and usually there is division between north and south of the river but this is a spot on the train line halfway between north and south and it is quite a glamorous shopping precinct.”
A panel of judges will award the successful entrants $1500 each towards their concepts, which will feature at the festival for the public to engage with and enjoy.
Entries can include light, sound, suspension, digital or ground-based concepts entrants can build and deconstruct in hours, with no permanent effect on their surroundings.
After the event, FORM will award two overall prizes of $20,000 and $5000 for the people’s choice for potentially permanent fixtures in the streetscape.
While the group kept their idea confidential, Ms Fick said they kept coming back to the same thread of ideas in the creative process.
“When we were workshopping we wanted to stimulate all the senses,” she said.
“Another important thing we looked at was place – we looked at indigenous culture and history and the families that created the area.”
The women collaborated on their mystery idea and submitted it last week after months of planning.
“We’re incredibly passionate about WA and interested in the regeneration of Perth,” Ms Hullet said. “Shopping centres deliver consistency but we are trying to change that to be more engaging and interactive.” The panel will select the successful entrants on February 8.
