THE Dome coffee shop in Claremont has closed its doors after almost two decades, with a nearby competitor considering taking over the site.

A notice appeared on the window of the heritage-listed Bay View Terrace store on Monday, thanking customers for their support.

The franchise was originally part of the Claremont Post Office, which was upgraded in 1984 to include a new mailroom and more letterboxes.

In 1998, following changes to post office procedures that required less space, the addition was leased out and redeveloped for Dome Cafe.

Claremont Mayor Jock Barker said it was a sad day for the area.

“I hate to see any small businesses go,” he said.

“But I suspect the coffee shop further down Bay View Terrace has taken a lot of Dome’s business; (Stand’In Room) is different and funky and appeals to the younger generation.

“Like everything, the business model has to move with generational change that takes place, and young people generally don’t have time to sit down and lounge with a cup of coffee.”

Stand’In Room is a hole in the wall coffee shop that opened in July last year, boasting Claremont’s cheapest coffee.

Co-owner Paul Loiterton said he would be interested in expanding the booming business down the road to the former Dome site.

“If the rent wasn’t through the roof then we’d look at it,” he said.

“It’s such a good location and a beautiful building.”

Empire Homewares also closed its Bay View Terrace store on Saturday, completing its move to the old Bunnings site on Leura Avenue.

It is believed a Priceline store could take its place on the Terrace in the coming months.
