EDITH Cowan University students have built a one-tonne, 2m-high black swan using donated cans of food to win the CANstruction Perth 2018 competition.

“Because the cans could not be damaged in any way so they could be donated, we couldn’t use any glue, bolts or welding, and this made the neck of the swan very challenging as it is not supported by anything underneath,” ECU engineering student Minura Perera said.

The competition involves making large structures from cans of food, which are then donated to charity.

ECU’s entry took six hours to construct and used 2400 cans of soup, spaghetti, beans, tuna, fruit and vegetables donated by FoodBank WA.
