FORMER Subiaco mayor Heather Henderson has become the City’s first Freeman in nearly 15 years.

The award was announced at a retiring elected members function, and will be formally bestowed at a civic function next year.

“It truly is a great honour to be recognised in this way by my colleagues in local government,” Mrs Henderson said.

“It provides me with a permanent link and ongoing connection to the City of Subiaco.”

Mayor Penny Taylor said the former council member, who served for more than 25 years, was a well-known and highly respected figure in the community.

“Council faced a number of challenges during her period of leadership and Heather approached each of these with integrity and always fought for outcomes that were in the best interests of the community,” she said.

Mrs Henderson said she planned to continue nurturing the City’s relationships with their sister city of Subiaco in Italy, and the Benedictine community of New Norcia.

The former mayor is one of two living Freeman, including past mayor Richard Diggins.
