WESTERN Suburbs Weekly photographer Andrew Ritchie is a finalist in the Community Newspapers of Australia (CNA) Awards for Excellence for the 11th time.

The Community Newspaper Group photographer of 24 years is in the running for the Best Sports Photo prize with a photo of tennis player Andy Murray at the Hopman Cup and a snap of young hockey player Aiden Lowes.

Ritchie has photographed about 20 Hopman Cup events from when it was played at the Burswood Dome to now at the Perth Arena.

“It’s good to have the international stars in Perth,” he said.

“I’ve got to shoot Roger Federer, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis and Boris Becker.”

The photo of Murray was taken from the catwalk on the roof of Perth Arena.

“I can get an angle and perspective from there that you don’t get from the floor,” Ritchie said.

The photo of Lowes was a little more difficult.

“It was lunchtime and the sun was up so it was difficult to shoot,” Ritchie said.

“I brought the sunlight in to play and had him directly behind the sun. It was a hero shot.”

CNA winners will be named on June 23 in Melbourne.
