Existing and new members as well as visitors teed off for the first official tournament on the nine-hole course that has new grass greens, tees and fairways.

Golf Oracle director Nigel Williams, who will lease the course for at least the next 15 years, said it was such a quiet place where people could visit to escape.

Mr Williams played on the PGA Tour 22 years ago and runs golf courses in Maylands, Embleton and Yokine.

At the opening, RIA chief executive Paolo Amaranti said 12 months ago when the island won a gold WA Tourism Award, he promised to deliver on a golf course.

Mr Amaranti said that nearly a year to the day, they were launching ‘one bloody good golf course’.

RIA chairman John Driscoll said 11km of reticulation pipes would keep the tees, greens and fairways green all year round, but it would be a challenge keeping quokkas off the course.
