The nine-year-old has lived on Rottnest with her parents and younger sister Phoebe since she was born.
‘I was almost born here but we had to go to the mainland,’ she said.
While her father works on the island as a plumber and her mother cleans the nursing station, Selena attends Beaconsfield Primary School island campus, a small school with less than 25 students.
‘(I like living here) because of all the new people at school and you can tell them about the island,’ she said.
In her spare time, Selena lives the island lifestyle ” swimming at the beach and bird watching ” while the family makes fortnightly trips to the mainland to buy food and clothes.
Next year will be Selena’s last on the Rottnest ” her family is relocating to Perth to enrol her in Year 6 to make friends before she starts high school.
While Selena said it would be sad to leave the island, she was looking forward to joining a netball team, Girl Guides and going camping.
