Curtin University has awarded Jake Metcalfe an Elite Athlete Sport Scholarship.

The 19-year-old psychology student said he started surfing in high school at Hale School after a few of his older friends got into the sport.

‘I saw some cool videos on the Internet so I went for a surf and just loved it,’ Jake said.

Jake said the $2500 scholarship would cover some of the travel costs for the several international and interstate tournaments he competed in every year.

‘Curtin University understand my commitment, they’re flexible and help me balance my surfing and my studies so it’s not one or the other,’ he said.

‘In the future, I hope to be able to chase both the Australian tour and the World tour series.’

In between catching waves at City or Trigg beaches, Jake focuses on his psychology studies, inspired by his mum.

‘My mother’s a doctor so I was always going to work in a health field,’ he said.

‘It’s a way to help people but it’s not going to be a daily grind and will be challenging.’
