The man then approached cars at the intersection of South Port Street and opened the passenger door of a Volkswagon, pointing the screwdriver at the female driver.

Police said the man told her to drive, before she got out a short distance later, and he moved to the driver’s seat and drove off.

About 3pm, the man was allegedly involved in a traffic crash on Erindale Road, Hamersley, where the stolen Volkswagon was dumped.

The man then attempted to steal another vehicle, but was unsuccessful because he was stopped by a member of the public who held him until police arrived.

The man was charged with armed robbery, deprivation of liberty, car theft, reckless driving, attempted car theft and having no licence.

He will appear at the Perth Magistrates Court today.
