Lighthouse to Leighton kitesurfing race postponed

A FORECAST westerly wind has stopped the ninth annual Lighthouse to Leighton kitesurfing race from taking place on Saturday.

In a 3.30pm email to the 150 competitors, race director Tim Turner said a westerly wind would have prevented kites being safely launched at Rottnest Island for the 19.4km crossing.

Mr Turner said Sunday’s forecast 15 to 20 knot winds at 2pm could be right for the race.

However he cautioned that if that forecast failed the race could be held over until next weekend.

Racers usually start at 2pm, with the first kite-powered hydrofoils arriving opposite the Fremantle SLSC about 2.20pm.
