A WESTERN Suburbs man (89) and woman in her 30s are in hospital with minor injuries after the man’s 4WD careered across Stirling Highway and a footpath into the Flight Centre travel agent on Napoleon Street, Cottesloe about 11am.

“He came along Stirling Highway heading north, when I had literally just walked into the next-door post office, and I heard a screech, saw the car mount the footpath, and go into the travel agents,” witness Tim Wright said.

Debris from the crash reached the woman’s desk while she was working at the travel agents.

“What was so lucky was there was no one with a push chair going past at the time,” Mr Wright said.

Wild Horses clothing boutique owner Natalie Donovan said the impact of the 4WD’s collision with the wall sound “like a bomb”.

Ms Donovan said people could not see if the man was injured because of dust and smoke from the impact, which destroyed a wall and left rubble strewn inside the travel agents.

Members of the public told the driver to turn off his engine, which was revving highly, and checked if the travel agents’ staff were uninjured.

The man and woman were taken to hospital by St John Ambulance.

Police said whether the man had mistakenly stepped on his 4WD’s accelerator would be investigated.
