WHEN the Kapinkoff brothers embarked on their fifth metropolitan pub in the middle of a State Government project they knew what they were in for.

Adam, Rob and Kosta Kapinkoff, or ARK Group, pulled the first beers at Market Grounds on Tuesday and while the Government’s Perth City Link project that surrounds the pub is behind schedule, the trio is prepared to wait another month for a greener view from their beer garden, which is the biggest in Perth.

The Kapinkoffs also own Squires Loft in Scarborough – along with city pubs The Generous Squire and Durty Nelly’s, and The Duke in Carramar – so have endured interruption from the Scarborough beachfront development.

They can celebrate on two fronts this week with the reopening of the The Esplanade in Scarborough on Monday and the launch of Market Grounds.

Adam, of Scarborough, said they always went in to a new venture with a long term vision.

He said Market Grounds would operate well enough in the short term but the success would come in the medium to long term.

“It’s coming to the end of December so people will come and have a look and once the connectivity is there (between the city and Northbridge) we can push forward after that,” Adam said.

“Perth City Link is a massive State Government project.

“We saw Elizabeth Quay and Perth City Link so close to public transport, we’re near Perth Arena and in time there’ll be more commercial and residential so we’ll have density around us.”

ARK Group has honoured the history of the site, which was a market ground, through its menu that focuses on the baker, the grocer, the fish monger and the butcher.

There are also photos of the old markets in the staircase leading to the sunken lounge and mezzanine bar.

Adam said they had also done demographic research and have ensured the venue caters for families, sport fans and the pub crowd.

The official Market Grounds launch party is Thursday where the brothers’ parents Danny and Vicky, who shared their love of pubs with their sons and started ARK Group more than 35 years ago, will be special guests.
