Mosman Park council backs earlier opening hours for Leaky Tap Cafe despite resident discontent

Jon BassettWestern Suburbs Weekly

RESIDENTS alleging extra noise and more cars parking have failed to stop a cafe opening 30 minutes early to serve commuters takeaway coffee in Mosman Park.

“Opening at 6.30am will eventuate in staff arriving early which adds to noises in the early morning,” a report summarising public comment said at last month’s council’s meeting.

The Leaky Tap Cafe on Victoria Street proposed to serve commuters through a window from 6.30am on weekdays, and extend alfresco dining to 4pm on weekends.

But objections from three neighbours claimed disturbances from early deliveries, increased noise and the fact the cafe was already serving before its approved 7am time.

However, the council received a 119-signature petition from the applicant Olivia Vivian supporting the early opening and late closing proposals.

The report said strong community support was shown as 73 per cent of the signatories were from Mosman Park or nearby suburbs, and the proposals were reasonable given the cafe’s small scale.

Councillors agreed to the changes, but said all deliveries must be after 7am and the early coffee could only be provided by only one staff member for the first 30 minutes each weekday.
