Mountain bikers and runners set to blaze a trail for Muscular Dystrophy WA

Jessica WarrinerWestern Suburbs Weekly

MUSCULAR Dystrophy WA (MDWA) chief executive Hayley Lethlean will be riding for Perth Modern School student Reuben Cheuk when she joins more than 30 mountain bikers on Trail Day for MDWA this month in a bid to raise $1 million.

The team will brave a chilly south west morning in Dwellingup on August 18 to help about 800 people in WA who are affected by muscular dystrophy.

Mrs Lethlean will ride along with her husband and two sons for the third time, and is dedicating her ride to 17-year-old Reuben who has a form of muscular dystrophy.

Academically gifted and fun loving, Reuben is a Mt Lawley resident and Year 12 student at Perth Modern School and a chess champion.

“I will again ride for Reuben, and raise funds and awareness about muscular dystrophy,” she said.

“It’s brilliant being outdoors in the beautiful Dwellingup bush, riding alongside a sea of purple jumpers all in the name of a charity close to my heart.”

Mrs Lethlean said she was grateful to the Perth mountain biking and trail running community, who were part of the Trail Day for MDWA initiative.

“No matter a person’s abilities, their right to live a full, rich life they love should be championed,” she said.

Participants in the Trail Day can ride 100, 68, 42 or 14 kilometres, or run six, ten or 21.1 kilometres.

MDWA does not receive government funding, and relies heavily on donations and fundraisers like Trail Day to deliver its services.
