New market sprouting in wake of Station closure

The owner of Golden Choice and Yens fruit and vegetable stalls Kim Huong Nguyen will open Subiacos first standalone fresh food market at 369 Roberts Road, next to the Pavilion Markets site.

About eight months ago when we got the news that the market might close, everyone was very upset, Ms Nguyen said.

We had no idea what to tell our customers, we did not know what to do.

Afterwards I thought: No, we have been here for 17 years and we need to stay. When you talk about Subiaco, everyone knows about the market. We are part of the culture.

A lot of people think the markets will close and there will be nothing else in Subiaco for them. That is not true.

Ms Nguyen said she was working with the City of Subiaco to prepare the shop for trading.

There is still some work to happen because we need to put in the storage room, sinks and washing rooms, she said.

We have to hurry up and get everything working, so we can open hopefully before this market is closed.

The new location is 800sq m, a good size for a big market. We will be open from Tuesday to Sunday and give our customers exactly what they want. There will be the same quality and price, the same people with big smiles. We are very excited.

The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority approved a $96 million Coles-Target shopping precinct at the Station Street Market site last month.
