A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl hid in a cupboard as a male thief searched her mother’s home in Tareena Street, Nedlands between 8.20am and 8.45am on Tuesday.

“She heard footsteps and some entering the front door, and hid,” Senior Sergeant Paul Gelmi said.

Sgt Gelmi said the girl’s mother was “momentarily” away from the house.

It was reported the thief went up and down the home’s stairs, before he stole a purse and a mobile phone from a dining room table.

However, credit and bank cards in the purse have not been subsequently used.

In Australia there is no law which dictates what age a child can be left home alone.
