North Cottesloe SLSC hosting Women in Surf event

Prestige PublishingWestern Suburbs Weekly

NORTH Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club (NCSLSC) is hosting a Women in Surf event next weekend as part of its centenary celebrations.

Guest speakers will include Olympic gold medallist and NCSLSC member Lyn McKenzie (nee McClements), former Australian Women’s Rugby Union player Debby Carley (nee Hodgkinson) and Fremantle Dockers inaugural AFLW coach Michelle Cowan.

While women were not allowed to join weekend surf patrols until 1980, they now make up about 40 per cent of the third oldest WA club’s membership.

President Ian Clarke said women had played a vital role in the club’s history.

“When North Cottesloe was established in 1918, of the 35 founding members 18 were females,” Mr Clarke said.

“North Cottesloe was very forward in promoting women in the club in the early years, engaging with them and encouraging them to compete in all aspects of surf life saving, even though they weren’t recognised by Surf Life Saving Australia.”

Pat Kidner (91) is one of NCSLSC’s oldest female members and will be attending the Women in Surf event.
