Officer hurt in Jolimont manhunt

About 2.50pm, two police officers on patrol saw four men jumping Peel Street fences and while one followed on foot, his partner chased in the police vehicle, before it was hit by a car driven by one of the men, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

Pepper spray and a taser were used to arrest the car’s driver and during this time one of the officers was allegedly assaulted. The driver was handcuffed but he then ran off when the other officer went to treat his semi-conscious partner nearby.

The injured constable was taken by St John Ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital and later released with severe bruising.

A search by other officers found the alleged driver in a Peel Street garden shed, two alleged accomplices nearby and a fourth person in adjacent bush.

The driver (29), address unknown, was charged with aggravated burglary, two counts of assaulting a public officer and escaping legal custody, before he was remanded in custody to reappear at Perth Magistrates Court tomorrow.

A Kewdale man (19) was charged with burglary, stealing and assaulting a public officer, refused bail and will reappear at Perth Magistrates Court tomorrow. A Kewdale youth (14) and a Brookdale youth (15) were charged with aggravated burglary and stealing and both appear at Perth Children’s Court on April 17.

Senior Sergeant Kate Vivian said the two officers had acted bravely when they were confronted.

‘I am proud of the work done by the two officers involved,’ she said.
