THREE northern suburbs clubs will take part in the inaugural Perth Dive Olympics this Saturday.
Hillarys Yacht Club, Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club and Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club have enrolled for the first competition on October 8 at HBF Stadium in Mt Claremont.
Divers will compete in unusual tasks, including a classic equipment ‘dump and recovery’ task where they are expected to resurface wearing an additional pair of shorts and a bra under their scuba gear.
While entertaining, the tasks reflect a serious side of diving and encourage skills needed if a diver becomes entangled underwater.
“This event is going to be great fun, a great way for different diving clubs to test their skills against each other,” Hillarys Yacht Club rear commodore of diving James Leesue said.
“Safety is always going to be the most important aspect of diving, and if this sort of competition encourages skills to stay safe, then all the better to help divers enjoy the sport.”
