Hail storm blasts through Perth

Staff WriterWestern Suburbs Weekly

A HAIL storm has blasted through Perth, with rain and strong winds marking a return to wintry conditions.

The storm hit Perth’s northern suburbs just before 4pm.

Carine resident Iain Cameron said the storm has clogged up one of the valleys in his roof resulting in rainwater pouring into his house.

The threat of severe thunderstorms has passed, but heavy showers are expected to continue into the afternoon.

Rainfall of up to 10mm of rain and windy weather are forecast, with drivers warned to be wary of surface water on roads.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services is monitoring and advised motorists to take care.

While this weather is not unusual for this time of year, it could damage homes and make travel dangerous.

The Bureau of Meteorology advised severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Kalamunda and Walliston.

Thunderstorms were predicted to affect Carmel, Glen Forrest and Paulls Valley by 2:15pm and Mundaring, Mundaring Weir and Stoneville by 2:30pm.

During storms, DFES advises people to find safe shelter away from trees and powerlines, stay inside away from windows, unplug electrical appliances and avoid landline telephones during lightning.

Meanwhile, a strong wind warning is in place for the following areas: Pilbara Coast West, Ningaloo Coast, Gascoyne Coast, Geraldton Coast, Leeuwin Coast, Albany Coast and the Esperance Coast.
