Perth’s Hannah Green hits the big time with major win

Staff WriterWestern Suburbs Weekly

PERTH’S Hannah Green has become Australia’s first female golf major winner since 2006 after a stunning triumph in the Women’s PGA Championship this morning.

The 22-year-old, who joined Mt Lawley Golf Club when she was nine, took a one-shot win over South Korea’s Park Sung-hyun at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota.

Green, from Lathlain, showed nerves of steel at the finish after Park pulled to within one stroke with one hole remaining.

Green’s approach to the final green found the bunker, but she steadied with a wonderful recovery to get within five feet of the hole and made no mistake with the putt.

“I was really nervous the last five holes,” Green said.

“I’m just really happy I made that last putt … I didn’t want to play that hole again.”

The last Australian woman to win a major was Karrie Webb, in 2006, and Webb – who won seven majors overall – was in the gallery to celebrate Green’s achievement.
