WHEN Dr Anh Nguyen met Oprah Winfrey in Perth three years ago, the talk show host and philanthropist told her to “speak the truth”.
This resonated with the Trigg plastic surgeon who was bullied during her training and early career and worked in a practice for 20 months without being paid.
“You need guts and courage to stand up to those who aren’t doing the right thing and the bullies I encountered through training and in my early professional days,” Dr Anh said.
It is this guts and courage that appealed to philanthropist Ros Worthington as she was choosing 35 ‘Women of Substance’ for a Breast Cancer Care WA fundraiser.
“Resilience, determination and guts… they need to have those values to empower other women,” Dr Worthington said.
On September 21, the philanthropist is bringing 35 accomplished women together at Fraser’s, Kings Park who will each sit with a table of guests to inspire them through conversation.
Dr Anh, a mother of three, is one of them and has plenty of stories of resilience, determination and guts to share.
“When I was pregnant with my first child one of the surgeons said ‘you obviously don’t take your career seriously’ and that was the tone throughout my early career,” she said.
“I didn’t need special consideration because I was a woman or a mum.
“I worked Christmas and all the days mums with kids would normally take off to prove I could do it.”
Four years ago, Dr Anh opened her first clinic in Perth.
“Three years after I opened at Crown and now I have a skin care range and training academy,” she said.
