MAJOR Crime Division detectives have charged 24 people over their alleged role in a riot at Greenough Regional Prison on July 24.

The people charged include 23 men aged between 18 and 35 and a 30-year-old woman.

The riot resulted in significant damage to the prison and 10 inmates escaped.

This prompted a significant police response involving officers from the Mid West – Gascoyne Police District and specialist squads based in Perth.

All 10 inmates were recaptured within 48 hours and subsequently charged with escape lawful custody offences.

The Major Crime Division investigation focussed on criminal behaviour during the riot.

All 24 were charged with rioters causing damage by fire which has a maximum penalty of 14 years in jail.

The court may also consider seeking restitution for damage caused during the riot as part of sentencing considerations.

All 24 have been summonsed to appear in the Perth Magistrate’s Court on October 30.
