POLICE have praised an 82-year-old Wembley man who defended himself against a younger robber in a daylight crime in Subiaco last Sunday.

“He handled himself very well,” Sergeant Jason Griffiths said.

The elderly man had just withdrawn $800 cash from the NAB ATM at the intersection of Rokeby Road and Hat Street about 9am.

His wife was waiting nearby in the couple’s car when the robber approached her husband at the ATM.

Sgt Griffiths said the robber attempted to grab the man’s wallet near the ATM, where the man gave his assailant a few “choice words”.

“He and the man sort of struggled back and forth,” Sgt Griffiths said.

However, the elderly man was able to keep his property from being taken by the robber.

“He pushed the robber in the chest, and he ran off,” Sgt Griffiths said.

The elderly man’s only injuries were a sore hand and a sore shoulder.

The robber was described as Caucasian, in his 40s, slim, with short and dark hair.

He was last seen heading north on Rokeby Road.

Police will review CCTV in the area.
