POLICE are warning burglars may be doing reconnaissance on homes after a couple in their 70s reported a suspicious window cleaner and his possible accomplice in Dalkeith.
“It sounds like there are people ‘casing’ houses in Dalkeith, including checking whether there are CCTV cameras, alarms, locks, and the like,” Constable Ryan Hoy Poy said.
The Joyce Street couple reported a man aged 50 to 60 knocking on their door asking to clean windows about noon on August 31.
The couple allowed the man to clean their windows.
Within 30 minutes, a second man drove past in silver, older-model Mercedes-Benz and started a conversation with the cleaner.
However, a Dalkeith address given by the men to the couple later proved to not exist.
“And they remembered maybe getting two knocks on their door in the past 12 months, and suddenly there are two men in 30 minutes,” Const Hoy Poy said.
The window cleaner was paid in cash.
Const Hoy Poy said residents should be observant, and for neighbours of the elderly to check they had not been victims of a scam or allowing someone to observe their homes.
