The guidelines were released last week and will provide a clear set of directions to support kindergarten teachers.
Mr Dart said the milestone guidelines would help prepare children for the next years of school and equip them with a curiosity for learning.
‘It provides more clarity without taking away the flexibility for teachers,’ Mr Dart said.
‘Before this, the education has just been focused on social learning, now there will also be content for teachers.
‘It will be planned learning through play and will provide more direction for teachers.’
Education Minister Peter Collier said teachers could adjust the guidelines to meet the needs of students.
‘All children develop at different rates and come to kindergarten with vastly different experiences,’ Mr Collier said.
The minister said the School Curriculum and Standards Authority sought input from schools and teachers in the development of the guidelines.
The guidelines would directly help students transition into the compulsory years of schooling.
